Student Success Statement

SSS: "TO BE GREAT--CONCENTRATE." -Orson Swett Marden
REFLECTION: I agree with this statement because it is stating that if we want to achieve something, we must stay focused on it and not lose concentration at all because we will never reach it.
EXAMPLE: For example if you want to get a good grade on a test, you must try hard and study hard as well.

The Power Of Study Groups (Part 1)

The Power Of Study Groups (Part 1)
Working Together Helps Everyone: You may have noticed that when you’re explaining something you’ve learned to a friend, you being to understand it better yourself. This happens because, when you explain an idea, you need to think more deeply about it.
The same principle makes study groups useful. Studying with others in a small group is helpful because you:
Ø Think out loud
Ø Share ideas
Ø Learn from one another
In an effective study group, you and other students hash out the lesson materials together—explaining concepts, arguing about them, figuring out why one person’s answer differs from another’s—and in the process, you most likely learn more than you would have studying by yourself.

Student Success Statement

SSS: "choosing the right is always the right thing to do." Alex Linares

REFLECTION: i agree with this statement because you should always choose the right under any circumstances no matter what because you will always have to choose the right when the time for choosing the wrong comes along in your path.

EXAMPLE: lets say you have an exam the next day, on a monday, and your friends invite you to a party. but most likely like a little kick back. therefore you say well its just a kick back so i will attend. then you go and you come back very very late and werent able to study. so therefore you fail the test the following day. Student Success Statement

SSS: " its better to be alone than to be in bad company."              -Anon

REFLECTION: i believe that what this statement is stating is true because id rather be surrounded by people that choose the right than to be surrounded by people that choose the wrong because at least you know that youll be safe witht those that choose the right, than with those that choose the wrong.

EXAMPLE: an example is when your friends ask you to go with them to the theatres instead of studying but you have another group of friends that want to go with you to the library to study for the test the following day, so you CTR and go with those to the library and later find out that those who went to the theatres had a car crash for drinking and driving. 7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens (Habit 7 Part 1)

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens (Habit 7 Part 1)

Habit 7: sharpen the saw

Teens should never get too busy living to take time to renew themselves. When teens “sharpen the saw” they are keeping their personal self-sharp so that they can better deal with life. It means regularly renewing and strengthening the four key dimensions of life- body, mind, heart, and soul.

1. Body. Eat wholesome foods, fruits, vegetables, legumes. Avoid illegal drugs, smoking, alcohol, tobacco products, tattooing. Exercise regularly and effectively. Get plenty of rest at night. Get to bed early at night and get up early each morning. “ early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”

2. Mind. Think positively. Read. Study. Think. Analyze. Seek to read a good book each month. Then each week. Ask intelligent questions. Observe. Develop your mind through positive “self-talk.”

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens (Habit 5)

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens (Habit 5)

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, and  then to be Understood

Because most people don’t listen very well, one of the great frustrations in life is that many don’t feel understood. This habit will ensure your teen learns the most important communication sill there is: active listening.

Why is this habit the key to communication? It’s because the deepest need of the human heart is to be understood. Everyone wants to be respected and valued for who they are—a unique, one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-cloned individual. People won’t expose their soft middles unless they feel genuine love and understanding. Once they feel it, however, they will tell you more than you may want to hear. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Listen with your eyes, heart and ears. 7 percent of communication is contained in the words we use. The rest comes from body language (53 percent) and how we say words, or the tone feeling reflected in our voice (40 percent). Most people are eager to talk and had rather talk and listen. We have one mouth and two ears. This means we should listen twice as much as we talk. We actually learn more while listening rather than we talk. Learn to listen and listen to learn.

Listen, really listen, for understanding. Seek first to understand, and then to be understood--- listen.

Student Success Statement

SSS: "the only difference between those who have failed and those who have succeeded lies in the difference of their habits. good habits are the key to all success. bad habits are the unlocked door to failure. thus, the first law i will obey, which precedeth all others is- 'i will form ood habits and become their slaves.'"                          - Og Mandino

REFLECTION: i agree with this statement because it is true that the difference between those who have failed and those who have succeeded, lies on their habits. for EXAMPLE: lets say you have a test next week and you say that you are planning to study. so therefore the test is the next day and there are two boys and one of the boys chooses to go to a party and party everyday and says that he knows everything that there is to know so therefore he parties and his friend study's hard everyday that leaded up to the day of the test and when that test came up, the 1st boy claims that he will get a great grade because he knew everything already and the other boy did as well so then when they get their test scores back, the boy that liked to party, didnt like to party anymore because he had failed the test!!! on the other hand the one who did study recieved an 'A' on it and he was so proud of himself because he chose the right and studied. while the other one that felt pure shame, promised that next time he would try hard. Ten Tips for Studying Success

Ten Tips for Studying Success

St. Johns University

1.  Attend your classes. Remember in the words of Woody Allen ‘seventy percent of success in life is showing up’.

2.  Know your faculty. Make sure you know who your teachers are, when their office hours are and how to contact them.

3.  Make sure the faculty knows you. Sit in the front of the classroom. Participate in class discussions. Consult with your teachers during office hours.

4.  Use a daily planner. Note the date of exams, assignments, term papers, etc.

5.  Be organized. Prioritize your responsibilities. Manage your time. Remember everyone has the same 168 hours a week, only some of us manage their time in a better fashion.

6.  Take care of your health. Get enough sleep. Eat well-balanced meals. Exercise regularly. Make informed and mature decisions about alcohol, sex and drugs. Visit the Health Office as needed.

7.  Get involved in campus activities. It will help you learn valuable skills, expand your social network and enhance your self-confidence. Seek out opportunities to apply what you learn in the classroom.

8.  Keep your eyes on the prize. Clarify your goals. Know why you are in (high school or) college in the first place. Visualize your success on a daily basis.

Profile Of A Successful Student (Part 2)

Profile of a Successful Student

 (Part 2)

Work together. There are a number of ways that you can ensure you get the most out of your educational experience. First, participate fully. Engage regularly in the discussions and be willing to share your personal, professional and educational experiences. You can get to know your classmates through the dialogue that is created in a course environment-sometimes even better than in a face-to-face class. He/she is still your instructor and will be there to guide and assist you as needed.

Profile Of A Successful Student Part 1

Profile of a Successful Student

Part 1

A successful student…

Takes responsibility for his/her own learning.

Online learning can be a powerful, stimulating, engaging experience for the student who can work and think independently. However, since most-if not all-of the learning takes place on your own time, you will not have the kind of direct supervision you would in a classroom. All education comes down to what you’re willing to invest in the experience-this is particularly true in the online environment. Commitment, self-discipline and self-motivation are all the key qualities to ensuring success in an online course! While some courses contain modules that include videos or other activities, all of them require significant amounts of reading. And nearly all of your communication with your classmates and your instructor will be in writing. If these are weak areas for you, you will want to address those issues prior to enrolling or while enrolled in an online course. The PSU Writing Center is available to assist you… is willing to be a member of a learning community.

Successful Students 9

Successful Students

9

9. … don’t cram for exams. Successful students know that divided periods of study are more effective than cram sessions, and they practice it.

If there is one thing that study skills specialists agree on, it is that distributed study is better than massed, late-night, last-ditch efforts known as cramming. You’ll learn more, remember more, and earn a higher grade by studying in four, one hour-a-night sessions for Friday’s exam than studying for four hours straight on Thursday night. Yet, so many students fail to learn this lesson and end up repeating over and over again until it becomes a wasteful habit. Not too clever, huh?

When you cram, you are taking the shortcut, and shortcuts never produce any real worthwhile results. Also, when you take shortcuts, you feel rather rotten knowing that you could have done better but didn’t. Plus cramming for a test or project doesn’t help you academically, so why even do it. Plan ahead, prepare ahead. Give yourself plenty of days and weeks to prepare for upcoming accountability opportunities.

Study for Multiple Exams (Part 3)

Study for Multiple Exams

(Part 3)

E

nglish, math, foreign language tips: PRACTICE—especially foreign language. It is hard to succeed in a foreign language class if you are just showing and doing the work. But if you are in your room and look at objects and try to say them in the language you are learning it actually helps. Or if you send a simple text to a friend think about it, can you translate that to German or Spanish? These are the little things that will help. Here are my final words of wisdom for students who want to get better grades in college: time management and organization are critical key factors to success in college. And never be afraid to go ask your teacher for help. They have office hours for a reason-use them!
