SSS: "it is our duty to concentrate all our influence to make popular that which is sound and good, and (to make) unpopular that which is unsound (and not good)."   - Joseph Smith

REFLECTION: i believe that this statement is true because if we want a good sound, we will have to choose the right but if we want a bad sound, (which i'm pretty sure no one wants), we will have to choose the wrong. CTR!!!

EXAMPLE: for example, there are two boys in mr.haymore's class... one who is choosing the wrong and one who is choosing the right. one of the boys decides to go on the internet and play some games while mr.haymore is giving a lecture not being aware of what the boy is doing. the other boy turns to him and tells him that it is TOM time and to get out of the internet and the other boy refuses too. so in that case, the boy raises his hand and tells mr.haymore that he is using the computer... mr.haymore comes over and tells the boy to log off and sit on the bench. then afterclass mr.haymore thanks the boy and when he leaves the class, a group of guys comes up to him and asks, " why did you snitch on him?" and the boy said, "i didnt not snitch... the boy was choosing the wrong, so i decided to choose the right."

9. … don’t cram for exams. Successful students know that divided periods of study are more effective than cram sessions, and they practice it.

If there is one thing that study skills specialists agree on, it is that distributed study is better than massed, late-night, last-ditch efforts known as cramming. You’ll learn more, remember more, and earn a higher grade by studying in four, one hour-a-night sessions for Friday’s exam than studying for four hours straight on Thursday night. Yet, so many students fail to learn this lesson and end up repeating over and over again until it becomes a wasteful habit. Not too clever, huh?

When you cram, you are taking the shortcut, and shortcuts never produce any real worthwhile results. Also, when you take shortcuts, you feel rather rotten knowing that you could have done better but didn’t. Plus cramming for a test or project doesn’t help you academically, so why even do it. Plan ahead, prepare ahead. Give yourself plenty of days and weeks to prepare for upcoming accountability opportunities.

Student Success Statement

SSS: "what's right isn't always popular. what's popular isn't always right."    - Howard Cosell

Reflection: i believe that this statement is true because if you want to be popular, but being popular means choosing the wrong, then u have no point for doing that...but you may become popular by being known as the person who always chooses the right and never gives up or does anything wrong to impress those foolagins.

7. …understand that actions affect learning. Successful students know their personal behavior affect their feelings and emotions which in turn can affect learning.

If you act in a certain way that normally produces particular feelings, you will begin to experience those feelings. Not only will you benefit directly from your actions, your classmates and professor may also get more excited and enthusiastic.

8. … talk about what they’re learning. Successful students get to know something well enough that they can put it into words. Talking about something, with friends or classmates, is not only good for checking whether or not you know something, it’s a proven learning tool. Transferring ideas into words provides the most direct path for moving knowledge from short-term to long-term memory. You really don’t “know” material until you can put it into words. So, next time you study, don’t do it silently. Talk about notes, problems, readings, etc. with friends, recite to a chair, organize an oral study group, pretend you’re teaching your peers.

SSS: " the time is always right to do what is right."         - Martin Luther King, jr.

Reflection: i believe that this statement is true because when you want to choose the right it is always the perfect time to do what is right but when you want to choose the wrong, lets just say its always the wrong time and there never is a right time for you to choose the wrong. CTR!!!!!

3. …ask questions. Successful students ask questions to provide the quickest route between ignorance and knowledge. In addition to securing knowledge you seek, asking questions has at least two other extremely important benefits. There are no foolish questions, only foolish silence. It’s your choice.

4. …learn that a student and a professor make a team. Most instructors want exactly what you want: they would like for you to learn the material in their respective classes and earn a good grade.

Successful students reflect well on the efforts of any teacher; if you have learned your material, the instructor takes some justifiable pride in teaching. Join forces with your instructor, they are not an enemy, and you share the same interests, the same goals- in short, and your teammates. Get to know your professor. You’re the most valuable players on the same team. Your jobs are to work together for mutual success. Neither wishes to chalk up a losing season. Be a team player!

SSS: " i know only that what is moral is what you feel good after and what is immoral is what you feel bad after."                                                                                                          - Ernest Hemingway

Reflection: i believe that what this statement is stating is true because when you do something bad like lie or hurt someone, they might not know that your lying but you do feel very bad right after or in other words you feel GUILTY! all you feel is GUILT! but when you feel good, it is when you know you did something right and you're proud because they know you did something right or in other words, that you CHOSE THE RIGHT!!!

Successful Students 1-2

Successful Students

1-2

Successful students exhibit a combination of successful attitudes and behaviors as well as intellectual capacity. Successful students…

1…are responsible and active. Successful students get involved in their studies, accept responsibility for their own education, and are active participants in it! Responsibility means control. In class, you can sit there, act bored, daydream, or sleep. Or, you can actively listen, think, question, and take notes like someone in charge of their learning experience. Either option costs one class period. However, the former method will require a large degree of additional work outside of class to achieve the same degree of learning the latter provides at one sitting. The choice is yours.

2… have educational goals. Successful students have legitimate goals and are motivated by what they represent in terms of career aspirations and life’s desires.

Ask yourself these questions: what am I doing here? Why have I chosen to be sitting here now? Is there some better place I could be? What does my presence here mean to me? Answers to these questions represent your “Hot Buttons” and are, without a doubt, the most important factors in your success as a college student. If you are familiar with what these hot buttons represent and refer to them often, especially when you tire of being a student, nothing can stop you; if you aren’t and don’t, everything can, and will!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nglish, math, foreign language tips: PRACTICE—especially foreign language. It is hard to succeed in a foreign language class if you are just showing and doing the work. But if you are in your room and look at objects and try to say them in the language you are learning it actually helps. Or if you send a simple text to a friend think about it, can you translate that to German or Spanish? These are the little things that will help. Here are my final words of wisdom for students who want to get better grades in college: time management and organization are critical key factors to success in college. And never be afraid to go ask your teacher for help. They have office hours for a reason-use them!

The Walking Horses training regiment Uncovered

SUMMARY: the walking horse is an event held in Tennessee every year. these horses are neccisarily bred through natural selection. the sir Mr. Jackie MCconnell would make a lot of money because he was known for trianing horses..... but little did they know that he wouldnt even train them... he would just practically kill them!!! ABC news investigated what was going on with these horses when he claimed that he would be training them. they sended a secret camera in to go seek out what was happening, and what they caught on camera was very, very, verrrrrry brutal and harsh. i dont understand how they could do such a thing. they would do the worst things to these poor little horses' hooves! put them in plenty of pain! lucky, with the footage they caught, they saved those poor horses from that evil little man!!!

REFLECTION: i believe that what this man did was very very wrong and brutal at the same time. he chose the wrong and had to pay the price for it...so that means that he could kiss the money he made goodbye! Study for Multiple Exams (Part 2)

Study for Multiple Exams

(Part 2)

My strategies for written assignments: everyone has their own writing styles. I generally come up with an idea and do massive amounts of research before I ever think about writing. I then organize my research then sometimes prepare an outline before actually writing. I have to give my eyes a break from it, and if I just wrote it I think it looks perfect. But if I look at it a day later I almost always find grammatical errors or phrases and sentences I just want to reword. How I succeed in team projects: never assume someone is doing what they are supposed to be doing. Have regular meetings and have each member show their work, not just give you or the group their word for it.

Study for Multiple Exams (Part 1)

Study for Multiple Exams

(Part 1)

How I study for multiple exams, deal with multiple projects: really it is my time management than I explained above. If I see I have multiple things due or to study for all at the same time I spread out my time beforehand. Sunday night I can review for my Monday test because I already studied for it. When that test is over I can begin reviewing for the other tests. My overall study method: I try to break it up over several days or at least two. I get bogged down if I try to pull an all-nighter. How I've overcome an initial bad grade: if I received a low grade I probably knew it was coming because I didn't prepare properly or I didn't use the right study habits for that class. I usually try to go over what I did wrong and sometime discuss with the teacher what I can do differently on the next exam or what they suggest I do for studying for the next exam.

Student Success Statement:
" seek to do good and you will find that happiness will run after you."       -James Freeman Clarke

Reflection: i believe that this statement is true because if you seek to do good things, or in other words, choose the right, you will get something good in return. for example: if you help a friend or a family member, by doing chores or yard work or etc... and not even ask for money or any other thing in return, you will get something good in return sooner or later. another example is when you're in need of assistance and need someone to help you with something, and you ask someone for help, and they help you and don't ask you for something in return, they will get something way better in return in the future whether its late or early :) CHOOSE THE RIGHT!!! <3

Sarah's Academic Success Story (Part 2)

Sarah’s Academic Success Story

(Part 2)

My test study method: I have different strategies for different types of tests or subjects. For me, any type of math is exceptionally difficult so I had to spend extra time on that. I would go back through the homework problems focusing on the problems that I had extra difficulty on. Many times I would ask the teacher for any additional study materials they could provide. If I knew there were going to be essays I would try to take the terms and apply them to an example or create different questions on the concepts focused on throughout the semester. My time management secret: I always always always carry a planner with me. I even use different color highlighters to show what each event on my calendar is for. For example, pink is personal, yellow is school, orange is work, blue is for appointments, and green is for my sorority. Although I use white-out frequently, I can see in bright yellow that I have that project for finance due on Tuesday, I need to start working on it on [the previous] Wednesday so I can just get it done. My friends have always been amazed at how early I get things accomplished but that is really all I do.

Sarah's Academic Success Story (Part 1)

Sarah’s Academic Success Story

(Part 1)

Time management became a key factor in my study skills for college. In high school, there were times I was able to study for an hour or two the night before a test and get away with it. This was not the case in college. I made sure in college I was prepared for each class. Sometimes that meant writing out the terms for the chapter we read (even if when it isn’t required) to better understand them. This helped me remember what I just went over in class then when I had a test one week later I was more likely to remember then as well. My overall study method: structured. One thing I learned was I had to adapt or change my study method according to the class. I couldn’t study for a religions class the same way I studied for a finance class. But making sure I had enough time to study for each class – even if it meant carrying a planner with me at all times was a big part of my success.

Work Together (Part 3)

Work Together

(Part 3)

Here are my final words of wisdom for students who want to get better grades in college: A big thing that not many will say is to ask for help if you needed it. It’s not a bad thing to not understand, it’s a bad thing if you don’t do anything about it. Plan your time out so you are completing everything that needs to get done and leave time to double check. If you don’t understand, go to office hours or find a classmate that does understand and is willing to help you. If you try hard, it will come to you. I find myself thinking that I would have to try harder to fail than I try to succeed. It is something that is within me to succeed. If that is not who you are, then hopefully things that I have done can show you that success is something that is amazing to find! Good luck!

English, math, foreign language tips: for math, all I can say is do the problems assigned. It is the only way to practice and that’s really all it is for math. It’s the same for chemistry; if you do the practice problems, you will understand the material so much better because those subjects are not just memorization like history, you need to be able to apply what you have learned in practical situations. As for English, I am no longer taking it, but I would say to leave yourself, plenty of time to write essays and papers. They take time to get all the information out of your head and onto the page, so don’t leave them until the last second.
